Every parent out there is undeniably familiar with the overwhelming exhaustion, both physical and emotional, that comes with raising children. However, it is of utmost importance to discover ways of seeing through even the thickest of this fog, to maintain a healthy relationship and a level of intimacy with your partner.

Through a pregnancy, it’s helpful for both partners to take some time to read up on expectations, that might be reasonable following birth. Both sides need to be extra-careful to be understanding of the other’s physical and emotional needs. While rumor and majority have it that women generally go through more changes during this period, men also need to be included as participants in this process.

Relationship advice and tips to help you get through this trying time:

Communicate: It’s common for couples to struggle in their child’s first year. When you are exhausted, it’s easy to complain and get triggered. You are also both dealing with an identify shift. Be honest and open with your partner about your expectations and take time to process feelings.

Find Time to Connect. Caring for your child is a full-time job, but it is important to care for your relationship as well. Hire a babysitter or ask a friend/family member and plan that alone time with your partner.

Schedule Intimacy Dates. May people may find it difficult to find the energy or time to have those intimate moments when parenting. Spontaneity may not be an option sometimes. Schedule intimacy dates and make sure you and your partner are connecting through affection and/or physical intimacy.
