Debbi Schachtel, Therapist in New Jersey

I am passionate and committed to treating couples and individuals looking to make impactful changes in their lives and relationships. I am a compassionate, straight-forward and down to earth therapist, who treats clients as equals by valuing their concerns throughout the course of treatment. I treat individuals and couples’ during periods of transition (preparing for marriage, parenthood, empty nesting or separation), grief and loss, anxiety, depression, and in general, helping people navigate through a myriad of life’s challenges.

My approach to therapy is collaborative and strengths-based, and I use a blend of insight and cognitive-oriented theories and techniques geared towards helping clients realize and embrace their full potential. I prioritize providing a safe and nonjudgmental space in which clients can feel seen, heard, supported and accepted throughout the process of growth and change. I am both a provider of information and a secure base from which clients can explore new ways of navigating through their lives. I truly believe that we all have the capacity to grow and meet desired objectives once pathways have been revealed and cleared.

I give guidance and share feedback about noticeable patterns, piecing together aspects of your life and story to help increase your self-awareness. I use Emotionally Focused Therapy, Gottman and Imago therapy to help couples work through negative dynamics. I offer tools and ways you could challenge your thought patterns. Over time, my goal is for you to better understand the root of distressing feelings, make better decisions and live a more meaningful life.

I received my bachelor of arts’ degree from the University of Michigan with a focus on sociology and psychology. I also hold a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School and practiced corporate law for several years before transitioning into the mental health field. My years as a lawyer helped shape my skills in aiding in conflict resolution, listening deeply so clients feel heard and listened to and being particularly attuned to clients’ verbal and nonverbal communication. Additionally, my previous work experience has provided valuable insight into the pressures and stressors of the modern corporate world which often plays a part in clients’ day to day worries and anxiety. I received my Master of Arts in Counseling with a concentration in Clinical Mental Health from Montclair State University.
