We all experience anxiety, as no one is completely stress- free. But, when faced with a crisis it’s important to know how to cope with anxiety especially when it negatively affects us mentally, physically and emotionally. Try these 4 tips to manage anxiety during a crisis.
- Self-Talk: You want to make sure you are practicing positive self -talk such as “everything will work itself out,” or “it will all be okay.” Negative self-talk just increases anxiety while positive self -talk can calm and help you manage your emotions. Try to work on shifting negative self -talk to positive self- talk which helps to keep things in proper perspective.
- Mindfulness: Practicing Mindfulness can reduce stress, anxiety, and negative emotions. Mindfulness helps bring you out of your anxious thoughts and into the present moment. Mindfulness is the “basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.” It can help you manage anxiety, cool down when you temper flares and sharpen your ability to concentrate.
- Seek out Supports: Seek out comfortable, familiar surroundings and avoid spending too much time alone. Share your thoughts and feelings with those who are supportive and helpful. When you are feeling anxious, deal with feelings at hand by talking them out with a friend. It helps to talk to supportive friends and family as a reassuring voice can make you feel better.
- Self-Care: Care for yourself by eating well and resting when needed. Fit in time for exercise or focus on a hobby. Remember to get enough sleep as it can help control your moods and you can feel better in general.
